CARB Truck Testing Monitor Readiness Criteria

OBD Monitors Are Ready For Clean Truck Check Emissions Testing

On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) Readiness Criteria For CARB Testing

There should be No check engine light on instrument cluster and No Active, Pending or Permanent Codes in OBD memory. In addition since the last code clearing vehicles must have accumulated:

  • at least five (5) Warm-Up Cycles, or
  • at least 200 miles travelled, or
  • at least 400 minutes engine run time, or
  • at most two (2) incomplete OBD Monitors.

If there is a Permanent Code in OBD memory, the truck can still be tested and Pass and the Code will be ignored if the vehicle has:

  • at least 15 Warm-Up Cycles, or
  • at least 400 miles traveled, or
  • at least 800 minutes engine run time, or
  • at most one (1) incomplete OBD Monitor.

Diesel vehicle PDTCs are related to after treatment failures in the majority of the situations. After treatment systems monitors are not required to complete in order to pass Smog Check (any two “not ready”
allowed)

What Are The Requirements To Pass Clean Truck Check Diesel Smog Test?

If your vehicle had some repair done recently or battery got drained too low to start the vehicle may not be ready for Clean Truck Check testing immediately. An OBD test submitted to CARB that does not have sufficient run time and number of warm-up cycles will get a Not Ready test result and will not meet the emissions compliance testing requirements. If your vehicle test shows “Not Ready” result, you should continue operating the vehicle under normal business practices for a few days and if no Check Engine Codes return, then have the vehicle retested.

To successfully pass emissions test and obtain Clean Truck Check certificate vehicles must registered VIN in CTC-VIS portal database and have completed a number of engine Warm-Up Cycles, miles driven and engine run time since the last repair or the last Diagnostic Trouble Code Clearing.

Heavy-Duty Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance Program implemented by CARB

Starting January 1st 2025 California Air Resources Board HD I/M program will require all commercial vehicles with gross weight over 14,000 pounds to test emission control systems and submit a reading snap shot to CARB database. As this new regulation took affect this year, many business owners got caught by surprise when commercial truck DMV registration renewal was showing incomplete and marked non CARB compliant vehicle. To complete registration renewal requires diesel emissions test: smoke opacity test or OBD reading snap shot.
